Optical Character Recognition


Abstract. Initially this R&D project started as an Optical Characters Recognition (OCR) system for automatic Iberian ham traceability. The initial project was followed by a R&D project with the company DeInta SL to develop a first prototype of vision-based car license plate recognition. The system is made of 3 different parts: the license plate detection and normalization, the characters segmentation and the license number recognition. The system is able to process an image in few milliseconds, obtaining very high recognition rates (over 95\%) even in real time and complex scenarios (bad illumination, deteriorated or dirty plates). The success of the license plate recognition project led to a commercial product.
